Lot's of people use codeset translation.
As I recall, the basic concept is that if your client machine and your server are using different codesets, then you need conversion.
So, if you had a Chinese version of windows but a US version of Unix, then any Chinese characters you entered would come back incorrect. On a Chinese O/S with Chinese windows, there isn't a problem.
That's the basics of codeset translation as I understand it.

I've heard that the rates are pretty good but the trips home are few & far between.

On earlier versions, this could be because a client PC has disconnected without logging off. This causes the server to loop.
