We have an issue with our client losing telnet connection to the server. This is an issue that a small number of people have experienced out of 100's of users.

Symptom 1:
After a variable period of inactivity the client will lock up. The client returns no message, the Server continues to hold the port open and the activity remains locked as if it was in use. When you attempt to do anything on the client end, the client seems to attempt the command then returns a socket error. Once you close the session, the server will time out the normally, as if the connection failed.

Changing the equipment involved lengthens or shortens the variable time period. For example, when a laptop was experiencing this issue, adding the docking station radically shortened the time the session could remain inactive without issue. Cable length and adding connectors also changes the time period. A desktop ran longer on the same connection than a laptop. The time has ranged from 8-10 minutes to over an hour. The time varies with hardware configuration, but is stable and repeatable on that hardware configuration. This happens on connections that are local and only on switch away from the server.

This happens with the Pro4 Client into Glovia/Pro4 and with a Toad connection into the Oracle database.

Symptom 2:
When shelling out using !KSH, a long directory listing will cause a socket error and disconnect during the listing.
Doing the directory listing with putty does not produce the disconnect on the same connection and hardware setup.

All symptoms are limited to a few connections. Many users can run indefinitely (2-3 days of inactivity) without losing connection.

Environment:
Server:
M4000 box
Solaris 10
3 containers on the system:
1 for the operating system
1 for Glovia version 9.1
1 for Oracle 10G

All clients are on PC's or laptops running XP.

Any ideas what is going wrong??

Hey Rob,

Its been a while since anyone around here said THANK YOU for hosting this site and all the good work you do. I for one am most grateful to you for this place and the data and knowledge harbored here.

Is there anything we, the users here, can do to help you out?

I was in a bit of a panic the other day....LOL. Good to see the site is well.

Cheers!

This was forwarded to me Friday:

I received the following message from a good friend of Curtis. He asked me to pass this on to as many of Curtis' old buddies at PRO-IV as I could get hold of.

I quote

"It is with great sadness that I must report that our friend Curtis Goodrich succumbed in his long fight with cancer last night, and passed away at 11:05 PM.
I am sorry to inform you through a mass e-mail, but I wanted to make sure to get the word out to as many people as possible and we have not yet been able to get his phone book from the hospital as of yet. As soon as arrangements have been made, I will inform all on this list

With condolences,

Jeff hall"

Curtis was an original with ProIV and a good guy. We will miss him.

I think we have a problem.

I've been thinking hard on this, and doing a lot of research on this
problem. But I can't see a solution. There must be a way out of
this, but I just can't see it. It seems inevitable. I've replaced the
batteries in the calculator, but the answer comes out the same.

Everybody keeps telling me that it's not all that important, and to
just go home, take an Aspirin and call again in the morning.

But the evidence is there. For all to see. The outcome is certain.
There is no way out. It's obvious. The signs are clear.

December has begun with the Sun, Mercury and Pluto all in
Sagittarius.

There is a Grand Trine in the Water Signs with the Moon and Saturn in
Cancer, Venus and Mars in Scorpio, and Uranus in Pisces.

The Lunar Nodes are moving out of the fixed Taurus/Scorpio signs and
into the cardinal Aries/Libra signs with the North Node in Aries and
the South Node in Libra.

Astro-locality analysis suggests that a few zones may be particularly
at risk during this SuperMoon period.

Ceres enters Scorpio on December 10. The Sun enters Capricorn on
December 21. Mars enters Sagittarius on December 25.

The significance of the Mars-Uranus square at 4 Sagittarius-Pisces is
profound.

The current era, ruled by Venus and Mars, rulers of Taurus and
Scorpio is coming to an end.

There is no disputing these facts. It all adds up. The conclusion
is inescapable. There is only one possible outcome.

Prepare thyself.

All that ProIV code we have written will become 'self-aware' at 3:19pm on the 28th
of December, 2004.

It will be the end of us all.
