Hi,

I have decided to start up my function editor project again.

I gave up on it a while ago, because I was having major problems with the communication between the PC & ProIV.

I have got around that, and I have completely re-designed it.

There is not much functionality there yet, I just wanted to get a Preview up so that you guys could tell me what you think. And if I should continue with it.

I have tried to follow windows standards, drag and drop, full keyboard access and it works very quickly. It will run at a fast speed even on a 300mhz PC.

As soon as I get it a bit more stable, I will post a preview version for you to try.

Please give me as much feedback as possible, either email me directly (rob@proivrc.com) or post a post here. Good or Bad points.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have not yet thought about the 'marketing' side of things.

I want to get it working properly first, by getting you guys to suggest things / design.

We have never had a good development tool (apart from in the green screen days with pro-aide) so I want to get as many ideas as possible.

If I can get people interested then maybe I can setup a separate forum, just for ideas etc on it.

So, come on guys.... Give me some suggestions...

I want to get a Pre-Beta version out as soon as possible, so you guys can play with it and give me some feedback.

Any development will be posted at this site, so you just have to look here.

Thanks,

Rob D

Rob, This looks great. Just too bad you can't write an environment like that inside pro-iv.
Does this mean you have access to the bootstrap file definitions of 5.0?

Hi,

Thanks,

It would be nice to do it in ProIV, but not every language is suited for everything.

For example, You would not write a low level disk defragment tool in ProIV you would do it in C or C++. ProIV is just not up the type of interface that I want to supply.

I have tried to do it in ProIV, but the GUI is just not up to the same standard as VB.

As for the bootstraps for V5.0, its fairly easy to work them out.

There will be 2 versions of my editor, one for 4.6 first, then I'll add the extra fields for 5.0. As I suspect that alot of people will be on 4.6 for a while and I want to be able to support them also.

First of all, It looks Great!!

If you have access to the bootstrapfiles does that mean it is possible to build your own client in VB?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

You would not need the bootstraps to write your own client.

You could just intercept the codes that the kernel writes out on the port. This is what the ProIV Client does.

I think that there are a few companies that have done this.

It looks great. What would something like this cost?
Any thought on that.

I have developed mostly in green screen, and avoided the Gui development (even the native one). Is just not very good.

Hi,

Sorry, I missed your post.

I'm not sure about the cost yet.

I want to concentrate on the design and making it work how people want it to. Then I'll think about cost.

Drop every other project you are involved in and get that GREAT editor out the door! Stop eating and sleeping if you have to. We have been developing in PRO for twenty years and have NEVER seen something which will help us more. You are not only on the right track - you are on a laser beam. There are plenty of PRO developers out there who you have never heard from who would buy it. A true graphical IDE for PRO-IV? Its about time.

Now stop reading this and get to work.

Cool Design Rob,

One thing that I've personally have missed, and have not seen since I've worked with an editor called 'RobsMenu' (no idea if you're the designer) is the ability to Mass Add/Remove UMSG's to ALL logics to allow stepping through of a function. Currently, we have to go in a physically add each UMSG to each logic...this is a pain staking arduous task. Then if you forget one...You can see where I'm getting to. If you're not the one that designed RObsMenu, all the ability did was to add or remove a USMG in line 001 of every logic.

Just a thought.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Indeed, I am the 'rob' of 'robmenu' :)

I will include most of the utilities that I have written over the years in the env. Probably not until I have finished the editor first.
