Has anyone been using the ProIV Client under Vista? I'm evaluating the impact of some users moving to Vista - the earliest supported ProIV Client for Vista is 6.1.12.0. The functionality I am trying to test (AXTREE) works fine under ProIV Client 5.5 524, and 5.6.7.0, against kernel 5.5r345 and also 5.5r556 but I can't seem to get it running under either XP or Vista using the 6.1.57.0-PR client when I use the silent install option (/V/quiet /S), which would be a plus for our client's network support people. The AX controls don't appear to register correctly. Are there any extra steps involved in registering AX controls etc. or any pointers anyone could give me - thanks. I don't know if it's black and white that these controls either fully work or not at all, but calls to tree control method AddRow seems to hang the client, whereas AddrowEx appears to avoid the hang. Setting the visibility to TRUE/FALSE for the tree control does not hang the client but appears to have no effect. Method calls to expand or contract the nodes in the tree appear to hang the client also. Obviously the interactive install is a work around but with a large number of workstations this would be inconvenient.

Regards,
Jim.

Jim,

I had similar problems when I installed an earlier client on Vista. I contacted Pro-IV and the solution given was that, when installing the client, the user must be the administrator and have User Access Controls (UACs) turned off. When I installed I did not do the latter, when I did all worked perfectly.

To turn off UAC's I think it's tick box in 'Control Panel/User Accounts' somewhere. I'm on XP here so I can't check.

David,

Thanks for the reply. I had come across the administrative rights and UAC issue during the install - though the install would apparently complete successfully with UAC on, there were a few funnies to do with image caching (specifically downloading from remote internet site) and some others I can't think of right now. I've had to move back to testing under XP at the moment because of time limitations - that's what most of our clients are currently on - they are moving from an older ProIV client, necessitated by a kernel upgrade. I'll get back to Vista soon, but in the meantime, I've noticed that the silent install vs. the interactive install of client 5.6.7.0 under XP appears to differ in the processes it starts - we have been getting occasional client exceptions to do with Access Violations so it may be relevant. When launched silently with the current windows user 'Administrator', the installer kicks off:

1 x setup.exe as Administrator - exits when the install completes.
3 x msiexec.exe, 1 as SYSTEM (guessing this is just starting the Windows Installer Service as is continues to run after the install completes), 2 as Administrator - these exit when the install completes.

When launched interactively, the installer starts:
1 x setup.exe as Administrator - exits when the install completes.
4 x msiexec.exe, 1 as SYSTEM (guessing this is just starting the Windows Installer Service as is continues to run after the install completes), 3 as Administrator - these exit when the install completes. The third one starts up after the location of the install and confirm install are selected.

I am wondering if the fourth msiexec process that occurs during interactive install does something that is missing/different during the silent install. Will post back if I find anything. The crashing is at best intermittent - haven't been able to find any obvious triggers yet. A good run of test cases using the client under both installation scenarios may reveal something.

I suppose the extra misexec process during interactive install could be the display of the UI but the AXTREE issue makes me suspect there are other differences.

Regards,
Jim.

Late Edit: Just verified the silent vs. interactive difference with 6.1.57.0 Client install under Vista too.
