Mike

Don't forget that Northgate could change the gen process to compile straight from the VIP bootstraps and not bother with the old bootraps files at all. It would speed things up a bit and where would that leave IDE?

Steve

Yes, I know, and as it's part of the grand plan I assume they will at some point (v7 ...), despite the fact the VIP boots are poorly designed and rather unnecessary.

It doesn't change the truth of my original statement and certainly isn't a good reason for having no other development tools available.

All the "decent" tools I've ever used have not originated with ProIV (even if they did buy them at some point) so why force people to use something if they don't want to.

As long as we're talking hypotheticals: they could also do away with the bootstraps completely and tell us to code in XML. Unlikely but, again, it would be up to other developers to change their development tools.

There is no sound business reason for forcing people into the VIP model and ProIV aren't making themselves any friends, and certainly not gaining any new devotees (or too many customers, I imagine), by doing so.

By 'Most developers are using VIP' I meant the highest percentage of replies at the time, and still true as i reply (just with 24%). Many development shops will stick with the manufacturer supplied product especially when it is included in the price.

Oh, and as I recall that was a multi-choice poll - I voted VIP as we do use it for a few GUI parts. Not out of choice but precisely because we have no choice. Take a poll of primary development tools and I imagine the numbers for VIP would be lower.

As soon as we do VIP will be out of the window !!

History has taught us that EVERY time someone restricts the access to a box or an operating system it dies.
The ones that have flourished have been open acccess systems that the general users community can improve on as their needs indicate.

It slays me that the powers that be CANNOT see this simple basic truth.

I am sure they see it; they either do not want to or cannot do anything about it. Perhaps the more arcane something is, the better it is for services revenue.

Opening it up should NOT impact thier services revenue.
The ability to change the code EASILY will open the door for more syetems to be sold, more code to be written in Pro-IV and thus INCREASE revenues.
For every 10 new accounts they add, 6-8 will not have the ability to code within and will need thier or our services.

This is a case where MORE cooks DO make a better stew.

Hi Rob

Do you think it's time for another poll?

We're just trying 6.1 + VIP after years of 5.5 + Pro-AIDE, so far I can't say I'm over-impressed.
Unfortunately senior managers love pretty screens and slick demos...
