I just discovered Oracle have released Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE).
This is a FREE capacity-restricted version of the regular Oracle 10g DBMS.
Some key facts appear to be as follows:

Based on the regular Oracle 10g code (so obviously free as in free beer not as in open source!)

Free to download, develop-on and deploy and can be freely "embedded" in ISV apps.
Simple installation using the "usual" native installers for the OS.
Trivially upgradeable to the non-free Oracle editions for larger capacity needs.
Available in Unicode for 10 major languages (plus of course ASCII-English).
Includes PL/SQL and Java (I think) in the database.
Includes all usual "program interfaces" to the database eg. C/C++/Java/PHP/ODBC/.NET
Includes Oracle Text text-search engine and Oracle HTML/DB.

Available only for 32-bit Windows and Linux platforms.
Limited to 4Gb of stored USER data.
Limited to running on one CPU and using 1Gb of memory.
Limited to one installation per server (don't know about virtual servers though!)

Admin can be done through a browser interface (whether new+simplified or not I don't know).

I see no reason this should have any problem working with ProIV.

IN FACT..
Since it's freely embeddable, ProIV could bundle it with V6.0 on Windows and Linux..

Yes - I have. Its been running on my laptop for over a month, seems largely indistinguishable from any other 10G database - same behaviour from TOAD, JDBC, ODBC, etc. I *did* have some problems with the initial release in October/November, but the latest download is significantly better. Runs in around 256M quite happily, doesn't significantly get in the way, great for testing.

I will say that I have *not* tried it with PRO-IV as yet.

Cheers

Dan
