Trigger >> function

Dear forum,
I’m trying to find a way that I can call a PROIV function from a trigger or stored procedure. I’m running on UNIX with oracle 9i. I believe that oracle can call external scripts, and from this I’m hoping that I can transparently log into PROIV and call a function.
Does anyone know the syntax for doing this, or if this is going to be possible.
