We have 3 external USB drives purchased for backup purposes. However, when we plug in an external USB hard drive to do database backups, the siteid changes causing serilization issues. Is there any documentation as to what will or will not cause a siteid change?

Thanks!

ProIV has never told anyone what they look for in order to keep thier security tighter and to keep folks from putting hte same keys into two nearly identical systems.
Since they charge by head count and/or seats, CPU type, etc. anything that will effect the size of the platform it is running on is likely to trigger this change.

It is a PITA.

I have used external drives and sticks for years without issue. We are on 5.5.

Thanks for the info, Lew! It is odd that some external drives and sticks do not cause the siteid to change and others do. Do you plug them in while the server is up or down?

I have 5.5 server and client on my notebook. I plug and unplug both drives and sticks without shutting the system down. Notebook is running XP Pro SP3. I have customers with Windows Server 2003 who have plugged drives in. I did not do the work so I am not sure if system was brought down or not but we never had a site ID issue. HTH.

It seems to me that the Site ID is checked at boot only.
Once the system is up you should be able to plug and play without issue.
