ProIV v6 + Solaris v8

Officially this mix is not supported but has anyone actually tried them together?
It seems stupid to upgrade to Solaris 10 and ProIV 6.1 needlessly.
"PROIV version 5.5 is supported on Solaris 8 and Solaris 9. For a supported version of PROIV on Solaris 10 you should move to PROIV version 6.1"

What is Sun's position on this. Do they still support 8 and 9. Do you really want to be on an O/S that is not supported by the vendor.
Things should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler
