Hi all,
My erstwhile employers have been dodging pro-iv upgrades for ages now, despite everyone's attempts to get them to upgrade, they haven't done it yet. And yes, everything is unsupported, hardware, software, the whole lot!
We're using OpenVMS 7.1-1h1 and Version 4.0 r5.2.6 (yes, 4.zero. on a mission critical server. superb idea I think!)
According to the pro-iv site, the following works:
VMS 7.1 Pro 4.0
VMS 7.2 Pro 4.0 and 5.0 (both of which have issues apparently)
VMS 7.3 Pro 5.0
So, I've got a couple of questions...
First, I got asked today "Why doesn't Pro-v4 work on VMS7.3?". I couldn't answer (but I'm a coder, not an OpenVMS guru). Is there any reason that it doesn't work? Or is it just that Pro-IV systems don't want to support it?
Second, what are the issues (if there are any other than the ones on Pro-IVs website?) with running V4.0 on VMS 7.2? We don't really use the GUI, so we're not too bothered about that. In fact, does 4.0 run at all? 4.6 does, but I've not seen much about V4.
Thanks, Nic
p.s. Hi Aled!

We're running ProIV 3.09 on VMS... so there! Some of our customers are running 7.x systems with no problems so I don't think you should experience too many problems. I can't think why 4.0 should be different. Some of our clients are always running the biggest available Alpha's with the latest storage solutions so they always need to be up-to-date on VMS.

Crikey!
And there I was thinking that version 3 never worked properly... I guess you have disproved that!!!

Well it depends what you mean by "never worked properly". We're not using the ProIV GUI. It handles Global function calls if you patch the bootstraps - so it's not too bad really. Our main problem is that it can handle much larger functions than the Unix 4.6 versions we're also using - due to Workspace issues - so as we develop on VMS some functions fail when we port them to Unix.

We have a number of clients running on VMS 7.1-2, 7.2 and 7.3 running 4.6. We have not moved to 5.0 yet, but we are working on it and should implement shortly. We have not really experienced any major problems. We had some tcpip issues that were corrected when we ugraded the TCPIP version. The 7.3 user and 7.1-2 are GUI users the 7.2 is not

Looks like I wasn't explicit enough with my question. On rereading
you say you have not moved to v5.0 yet. Does DevStudio work
ok for you on v5? I have v5.0 and v5.5 on VMS 7.3 and the logic
editor doesn't work. Can't figure why. Was wondering if it is a
general VMS problem or something site specific.
